At Sturdy Roots, our Chief Entertainment Officer ponders the day's mission-critical tasks.
Regular readers of Sturdy Roots Blog know that we’re passionate about virtual offices. And we hope that you are, too.
But we’re eager to know: what is your favorite virtual office luxury?
Could it be that Aeron office chair you bought yourself last year? How ’bout your virtual-switchboard phone system? Or your power management software? Or your new hi-definition video conferencing service? Or perhaps it is that furry four-legged family member curled up on the pillow below your desk?
Inquiring minds want to know, so please post a comment and share your favorites.

Hi Dan,
This morning I stumbled upon your Twitter page and that’s how I got to your blog. Really good stuff here, Dan!
I’ve been doing the home office thing since 1988. For me, the best thing about my home office is the unobstructed view of Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in Central New York.
And it’s May and the weather here is getting warmer, so I now have the added benefit of open windows and lots of fresh air.
In my previous office gigs, I had no window so no natural light or fresh air. I’ll never give up what I have been enjoying for so long.
Best,
Samantha
P.S. – It looks like your Chief Entertainment Officer has a GREAT JOB!
Thanks for the compliments, Samantha. Please refer all your virtual office friends to my Twitter page or here to Sturdy Roots Blog.
And yes, my Chief Entertainment Officer does have a great job and a very good life!

I get more done, I wear what I want to wear, I manage the heat and AC, my dog works with me, I get to cook dinner for the family.
You didn’t ask, but the downsides…I work harder to stay present in the office environment, no birthday cake or co-worker lunches for me, I work much longer hours.
Thanks, Jane –
Yes, and having a 90-second “commute to the office” is really great, too. And I like the fact that you are also looking at the downsides.
Truth be told, you do miss a lot of the office camaraderie and you do work much longer hours. But the hours are broken up throughout the day…so you can get to see your kid’s 2nd grade play performance and not lose work time if she’s sick and home from school.
I talk to a lot of people in my line of work, and many of them dread long commutes (which according to many of them seem to be getting longer). More and more are asking for the option to work virtual (during some or all of the work week).
And I believe that with all the virtual office technology available like high-quality video conferencing and virtual switchboard telecommunications like that offered by 8×8 Inc., and the really cool virtual office tools in the works, the virtual office experience will become more widely-accepted and enjoyable.
And that’s better for the environment.
Trite as it sounds, my FAVORITE thing about the luxury of a virtual office is being able to run errands on OFF HOURS! I do admit, though, that when I run out at 10:30 a.m., I often say to myself, “What the heck are all these people DOING out here. Don’t they have *jobs*? Keep up the good work, Dan.
I have used various virtual office services, however I have been using Global Virtual Office Soluitons for the past 3 years and find them very satisfactory. They provide virtual offices worldwide in 120 cities http://www.global-virtualoffice.com
